Welcome to the Kenosha Sheriff's Department

Deputy Sheriff

The process for selecting prospective Deputy Sheriffs is a multi-stage testing procedure designed to idenitfy those best suited for the job. The Kenosha County Civil Service Commission oversees a merit selection process, which begins with a written test. Qualified applicants are placed on an eligibiltiy list, based on their test scores, and are then selected in descending order to proceed with further testing which includes:
* a driver's license review
* a background check
* oral interview
* a job trait assessment
* a physical examination.

Applicants must also meet several legal requirements. They:
* must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the examination
*in the three years immediately preceding the date of the written test, and continuing to the date of appointment, can not have been convicted of any single violation of more than four points and can not have accumulated more than six points.

The State of Wisconsin requires applicants to possess one of the following at the time of the oral interview:
* 2-year Associate Degree
* a minimum of 60 fully accredited college level credits
* OR certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board issued prior to Feb. 1, 1993.

Correctional Officer

The examination process for Correctional Officer is comprised of 7 component parts, each of which must be successfully completed before proceeding to the next step. During the process, the application will be reviewed, a written test will be administered, and the candidates will be interviewed and assessed. A background investigation and physical examination will be conducted prior to hiring.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:
* Applicants must be at least high school graduates or equivalent.
* They must be at least18 years of age at the time of application.
* They must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residency (Wisconsin or Illinois) or have the ability to obtain same within the first 90 days of employment.
* They must be free of criminal convictions.
* They must have an acceptable driving record.
