Environmental Health - Radon

THE HEALTH HAZARD IN YOUR HOME WITH A SIMPLE SOLUTION

Radon is a radioactive and odorless gas that comes from trace amounts of natural uranium in the ground in Wisconsin.  Breathing indoor air with high levels of radon can lead to lung cancer.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon causes several thousand preventable lung cancer deaths each year.

The National Academy of Sciences in February 1998 presented the findings of their report:  “The Health Effects of Exposure to Indoor Radon.”  The report confirms that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and that is a serious public health problem.  Radon gas can seep into a house through the foundation, and breathing air with high levels of radon can lead to lung cancer.

Between 90 and 95 percent of houses will not have a problem, but you can’t assume that your house will have low radon levels if your neighbor’s house has low levels of radon.  Radon occurs almost randomly, and each house on a block can have a different reading.

The Kenosha County Division of Health urges Kenosha and Walworth County residents to take action during 2010 and test their homes for radon.  Testing is easy, and if high levels are found, the remedy is generally not very complicated.  New houses can be built with features minimizing radon entry.

The Kenosha County Division of Health has radon test kits available at a reduced cost of $10.00 per test kit, including laboratory processing and evaluation.  The Kenosha County Division of Health has certified radon specialists who can interpret test results, and advise residents on reducing harmful radon levels.

Radon problems can be fixed by qualified contractors for a cost similar to that for many common home repairs such as painting or having a new water heater installed.  For more information, or to obtain test kits from your local Wisconsin Radon Information Center, call toll free 1-888-LOW RADON (1-888-569-7236) or the Kenosha/Walworth Radon Information Center at 262-605-6731.  Wisconsin radon information and a list of Certified Radon Contractors can be accessed at www.lowradon.org  Email requests for radon information, radon questions and/or test kit ordering can also be made to brad.wozniak@kenoshacounty.org
